                                                2009 Night Hunt Results

The 2009 night hunt was held on the Ridge Sat., May 2nd. We had a full class of 35 hounds competing for the win. Several hounds had to be turned away, so if you want to enter any of the remaining events, be sure to call early. We had outstanding running and our judges worked hard. It took 955 points to win, so you know judges were on their toes. We call scores in as they happen and the radios were buzzing almost continuously. There was a mix up on a number, but Fred and Eric were very understanding. I thank you two wholeheartedly for being such good sports! Every dog entered scored. That is quite an accomplishment. Here are the top 13 hounds:

1. Gregit's Little Man  Margaret Gordee

The Derby hunt was held on perhaps the coolest July 18th on record. Lots of dew and 20 eager hounds made for great running. The judges did a terrific job of getting scores. The Ridge is now half corn, so it took a tremendous effort to collect so many scores. The winning hound had 910 points. We had some first time hunters entered and they did a great job. A good time was had by all. The pairs hunt is next week and that promises to be a tough hunt with a full entry. There are some fast hounds promised to be on the Ridge next week. Plan to be here and be a part of the excitement.

15 mo. -29 Days & under Fun Hunt

We had 27 hounds entered in this hunt. Even though  the weather wasn't much fun, a good time was had by all. I believe the fellow that said; "we should just stop Eli at the gate and hand him the trophy", was right. Eli and Kayla had 5 in the top 10. The deal was however, that the winner bought breakfast. Boy was breakfast ever delicious! With the exception of the 1st place dog, the scoring was real tight. 70 points separated second thru tenth with 5, 6, & 7 - 8, 9, & 10 all knotted up and forcing tie breakers to decide placement. There were 5 dogs within 30 points of making the top 10. All these hounds performed admirably under some tough conditions. I think everyone there was rightfully proud of their hound. Thanks to all who braved the foul weather. A special thanks once again to our Friends at Beast Buffet for providing feed to the winners! Thank you Eric. We all appreciate your sponsorship.

2009 Ginger's Ridge Big Dog Hunt

The 2009 "Big Dog" Hunt was held on The Ridge 9/26/09. There were 26 hounds, representing 4 states, here running for bragging rights and the solid marble "Big Dog" trophy.  Running was fantastic! We had rain the day prior, along with temps in the mid 60's. There was a 5 hour roar on The Ridge. Congratulations to all! Everyone present is a winner in my book. If you ain't in it, you can't win it. Thanks to all those that went above and beyond. I always forget someone, but here goes. Special thanks to Tracy Lange, Dean Sager, Paul McCabe, Rob Tenison, Mike Brown, Kayla, My wife Margaret, Eli, Tracy Q. These people bought food, brought food, prepared food, came to judge, furnished a laptop and many other things that did not go un-noticed.   We had some youth here with dogs entered that won trophies. That is way special. Our grandaughter was here and helped out. That is also very special. Skyylah is a big city gal that adapts superbly to our country life style when she is able to stay. This was a very special hunt. We also had the National Feed Co. sales representative, Diane Reilly with us. Thanks Diane for spending the day at The Ridge. National specializes in performance feeds. Many of the dog sled owners feed National products. National Puppy Feed is a superb product. I would encourage you to try raising your next litter on it. If you want to run with the Big Dogs, you need to provide your pack with Big Dog nutrition. National is Big Dog nutrition!

                        Ginger’s Ridge S & D Trial Rules

                                                  Scoring

1. Hounds scored only for Speed & Drive. Score only the first 5 dogs at each crossing. 1st = 35 pts. 2nd = 30 pts. 3rd = 25 pts. 4th = 20 pts 5th = 15 pts. Any hound running game alone (single dog crossing) receives 20 points. Hounds following along behind the lead hound or hounds more than approximately 30 seconds behind shall not receive a S & D score. (Clarification for 20 point dog running alone score: If said dog is clearly outrunning a pack of dogs that are too far behind for deserving a S & D score, the lone scoring dog should be given 35 points. The 20 point lone dog score rule is intended to prevent a hound that would rather not hustle in a pack from going off by him/herself and racking up unearned 35 point scores. )

2. Judges shall always be paired. Hunters entering hounds will be paired and used as necessary. One judge shall read and call the numbers aloud, the other shall write them down and record the time. Judge calling the numbers shall verify they have been recorded correctly as called. We will use radios to call in numbers immediately if the laptop and program are available. Hand held tape recorders are a very valuable tool in this process and are recommended. Any dispute between judges shall be heard and ruled upon by the Master of Hounds. If the dispute involves a hound owned or co-owned by the MOH, a pre appointed three member panel shall make the ruling.

3. There will not be a time limit between scores. Times shall be recorded however, and used as needed to break ties.

4. Ties shall be broken by totaling the largest number of 1st place crossings. If still tied, the latest time for a 1st place crossing shall be used.

5. Anytime the front dog, or dogs, is/are missed, no scores can be given at that crossing. Additionally, any time a number is missed at a crossing, no more dogs can be scored. For example, if the judge misses the 3rd hound, hounds 4 & 5 shall not be scored either. (Exception to the "missed dog" rule: There will be times when a hound has the number come off, or it was put on as unreadable. This situation should be reported to the MOH and dogs crossing behind this unreadable number shall be scored.)

6. Hounds seen cutting to a chase shall not be scored at that crossing. If said hound(s) is still running the game at subsequent crossings, he shall be eligible for a score there. In other words, score only the hounds bringing the game to your crossing. Experience and discretion on the part of judges shall determine whether a hound is scenting and driving his game "on the wind", or rather he is outright cutting and ambushing a crossing. There are certainly times when a hound that is not right "astraddle" the track, is deserving of being scored..

7. Although giving tongue freely on the track is most certainly desirable, hounds driving by sight shall be eligible for scoring even though they have temporarily hushed while straining their hardest on a sight burst. This is a common phenomenon to running hounds and as such it will not be a penalty here.

General Rules Regarding Judges and Judging

1. All judges watches will be synchronized with that of the MOH at or before the cast.

2.Any observation of hound activity shall be recorded with the exact time of the activity.

3. Every reasonable effort shall be made by the judges to remain as inconspicuous to the game and hounds at a crossing. This will allow the most correct order of scoring possible. Try not to spook the game or break the hounds concentration.

4. Judges and management shall make every reasonable effort to keep the game safe. At no time however, should anyone strike a hound. There will be rescue units on duty to load the troubled game.

General Rules Regarding Owners, Handlers and Spectators

1. No alcohol is allowed at an event here.

2. Spectators, owners and handlers shall stay within the prescribed area during an event.

3. No one is to touch or encourage a hound in any way during an event.

4. An owner may catch his hound during an event if he so desires. The hound must then be crated and reported to the MOH as crated. Such action results in the hound being eliminated from the event.

                                                                 Special Notice

Ginger’s Ridge, LLC reserves the right to crate a hound that is prone to excessive cunning running. Said hound will be banned from future events and your entry fee refunded. If you own such a hound, please leave it at home. We do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings regarding this activity. Safety of the game is paramount here. If you enjoy these competitions, please be willing to abide by this paragraph. There are many times a hound will be "out" and need to get back "in". We certainly understand that fact. I want my hound to get back in the front also. There are also hounds that try to make a living by running alongside the pack and cherry picking the crossings. When that type of activity becomes perilous to our game, we will take action. Please take heed. This is not meant to offend anyone or their hound. It is a necessity for protection of the game. It has nothing to do with what we personally think of anyone’s hound.

Let’s have a fun time this year and may the best hounds win. If you have a good hound, please bring it to the Ridge. We will do our best to see you are fairly treated.
